Programme Requirements

Students can claim the Minor Programme in Music if they can fulfil the following criteria:

  • Complete 15 units in accordance with the stipulated Programme structure; and
  • Attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all the 5 courses (i.e. 2 compulsory courses and 3 elective courses).

 

Programme Structure

This Minor Programme consists of 2 compulsory courses followed by 3 electives. All students must satisfy the Music Ensemble requirement by attending Orchestral Studies, Choral Studies or Chamber Music Studies. In addition, students are required to take a compulsory course in Music Theory. Thereafter, students must complete 3 electives including at least one level-3 course. The Programme is summarised in Table 3 shown below.

 A student is eligible to apply for unit transfer from courses completed during his/her participation in outbound exchange Programmes to fulfil the Minor Programme in Music requirements. Such transfer is to be limited to 6 units for the whole Programme. Those who intend to do so have to initiate their applications in accordance with the stipulated procedures and regulations.

 

 Audition Requirements

Students wishing to apply for the Minor Programme in Music must pass an audition examination. For the
audition, students must play an orchestral instrument, piano, or voice. The structure of the audition is listed below.

  1. Pitch aural test: The candidate will be played a single note at the piano which must be sung back (4 points). After, the candidate will be played 2 pitches played simultaneously which must be sung back (6 points). (Total: 10 points).
  2. Rhythmic aural test: The candidate will be played 2 short rhythms (12 points) which must be clapped back.
  3. Melodic aural test: The candidate will be played 2 short melodies (12 points) which must be sung back. (Total: 24 points).
  4. Performance: A performance of two short contrasting works (between two and five minutes each in duration). (Total: 40 points.)
  5. Sight-reading: Candidates are required to sight-read a short passage on his/her first instrument.(Total: 10 points.)
  6. Interview: Candidates will be asked about concerts they have given and concerts they have attended, amongst other relevant issues. (Total: 16 points.)

All candidates must bring their own instruments (with the exception of the piano candidates). Should a
student wish to have an accompanist in his/her audition, he/she should arrange the accompanist by
himself/herself and inform Music Office (B411) in advance.
